Building A Better Boyertown has carried a number of initiatives that have made a dynamic difference in town and in the surrounding area.
The Façade Program is one of the most impactful programs managed by Building A Better Boyertown. In order to improve the appearance of the historic area, matching grants up to $5,000 are offered to property owners and business owners located on the downtown commercial streets. The latest round of $50,000 of façade funding awarded by the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) spurred $158,547 in private investment at 22 different locations. The work included new signage, painting, window replacement, trim, and ironwork.
Studio B Art Gallery
Studio B, an affiliate of Building a Better Boyertown, is Boyertown’s community arts organization. It is also home of the Arts and Activities Alliance, a committee of Building a Better Boyertown, yet supported mostly by external funding. Studio B celebrates lifelong learning, creativity and personal involvement in the visual and communication arts. They also serve as the community “go to” destination for learning, fun, and friendship. They regularly showcase the work of fine artists in themed exhibits, workshops, and classes, informal gatherings on interesting topics, gallery talks, and “Getting to Know You” opportunities. Visitors are always welcome to view the changing exhibits and take lessons in the visual, literary, and communication arts offered by highly-trained local artists and teachers. Studio B proudly collaborates with the many businesses in the Boyertown community.
In late 2017, Building a Better Boyertown received a grant from BB&T Bank, to assist the Colebrookdale Railroad to complete their railyard and support development of a tourism program. A robust tourism program has been in place since early 2018. A comprehensive tourism website www.historicboyertown.com was developed to feature the phenomenal visitor resources in and surrounding Boyertown. Seven thematic auto trails, including a George Washington Trail, the Ironmasters Trail, a Tasting Trail and more. All begin and end in Boyertown. They were developed to enable visitors to explore the area easily without having to do extensive research. The tourism initiative hosted group tours which were very well received. More recently, the website has been enhanced with more locations and a comprehensive social media plan is underway to make visitors within a 50 mile radius surrounding Boyertown aware of what we have to offer.
Over the past two years, Building A Better Boyertown has put a huge commitment of time into placing and caring for 84 planters with fresh, growing greenery in Boyertown to beautify the local streetscape. Lead by Charles Haddad in honor of his wife, Mary Lou, volunteers have invested 8,834 volunteer hours, and raised over $13,000 in order to maintain Victorian planters through all four seasons. The entire community is delighted by the joy that these planters have brought to our town.
Secret Valley Trail
The Secret Valley Trail, being developed for biking and hiking, is ultimately planned to connect Boyertown with the surrounding communities. The route, now being extended by an additional six miles, is planned to travel through Boyertown Borough, Colebrookdale Township, Douglass Township, and Amity Township. The report regarding the most appropriate alignment is currently underway.
