Boyertown Museum of Historic Automobiles
85 South Walnut Street, Boyertown, PA

It was 1872. J Sweinhart was announcing that he was opening a new factory in Boyertown to manufacture carriages, buggies, spring wagons and sleighs, never imagining that the factory would evolve into the Boyertown Auto Body works which manufactured car and truck bodies here until 1990. Both buildings are now part of the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles displaying Mr. Sweinhart’s carriages, horse drawn vehicles, wagons and sleighs, along with the original blacksmith forge, plus high wheeler and safety bicycles, trolleys, original Boyertown manufactured commercial car and truck bodies, and immaculately restored cars.

The museum also takes in other historic vehicles which are completely transformed through complete restoration by expect craftsmen. There’s even a 1921 Sunoco gas station and 1938 restored Fegely’s Diner, which once stood in nearby Reading.

Leggio’s Antiques
424 Niantic Road, Bally, PA

You’ll discover one of the most interesting stories surrounding antiques in the Boyertown area at Leggio’s Antiques, now run by three generations of the Leggio family. The tradition of restoring antique pieces and making things whole again started with Carmelo (the same person who started Carmelo’s Pizza in Boyertown) who began learning to work with wood at age seven in his home country of Sicily. He left his several restaurants behind when he purchased “a chair in a bag” the remnants of a Victorian chair that had fallen to pieces and a oak highboy, which he restored to magnificence.

Collecting continued and the business moved several times to land in Barto, in a 24,000 square showroom which you can browse at your leisure. Many of the pieces on display come still come from Italy, others are lovingly restored, and still others are custom built from components collected at estate and antique sales. If you want something crafted specifically for your needs, Leggio’s will do so, handcrafting it with great skill and care.
